If you liked "Sexy"...

If you liked Jhumpa Lahiri's "Sexy"....

then you might also enjoy  Two Step” by Maile Meloy or "The Thing Around Your Neck” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. For Friday, read the first of those stories and post a 4-5 sentence reflection/reader response here as a comment to this blog post. You also need to REPLY DIRECTLY to 2-3 of your classmates comments (think: Instagram/Facebook feed, but slightly more detailed than a series of emojis or five word responses!) as part of this assignment. There's no need to include actual textual evidence in either your original response or when you comment on classmates' work, but you certainly can. If you're having a hard time generating ideas, feel free to look back to the short story questions we used last term. I just want to get a sense of what you thought about the story you've chosen; there's no pressure, so have some fun and be creative. I can't wait to have a virtual discussion with you all!

  1. I thought this story would go a whole different way, but instead it just comprised of a normal dialogue between two characters. I didn't really particularly enjoy this story because it really is too short of a story to develop any meaningful plot lines or connections to the characters. However, I do think this is a realistic situation because many people have their own struggles with relationships and infidelity. I just can't relate to any of the characters or draw any meaningful conclusions. I think this story would be a better fit as a movie or a novel in order to flesh out characters and provide more meaningful background to the story.

  2. I like your honest opinion about the story. It is true that sometimes, something realistic can be less intriguing as something like a fantasy or made up. Interesting how you think the short story would better be portrayed as a movie or a novel to develop the story more.

  3. Interestingly, Meloy is also a novelist, so maybe that's what you're sensing here. It's true that none of these characters is particularly likeable, but I do think she captures, as you suggest, the realities of everyday infidelity and the flaws of each of these individuals.

  4. I think this story is a very interesting story detailing the struggles of a poor immigrant adjusting to life in a 1st world country like America. I liked how the author brought home the point that many Americans take living in a first world country for granted. For example, The narrator is shocked that a cottage in America would be as big as a church building in her home country. I also thought it was interesting how she highlighted many of the prejudices that an interracial couple go through living in a predominantly white society. I really liked this story because it puts me in the shoes of an immigrant which gives me a greater appreciation for the life I live today.

    1. Do you think the use of the second person helps put you in those shoes? And I also love the dynamics in the couple: I think it's so interesting that the boyfriend thinks he's so progressive and enlightened and yet he's also racist, just in a different way.
